HPV and Cervical Cancer: Screening and Prevention

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus that can cause cervical cell changes and, in some cases, cervical cancer. Regular screening, HPV vaccination and timely medical care can help reduce the risk of cervical cancer.

What Is the Link Between HPV and Cervical Cancer?

Certain high-risk types of HPV can cause changes in cervical cells that may develop into cancer over time. Persistent infection with these HPV types is the main cause of cervical cancer. HPV infections often cause no symptoms, which makes prevention and screening especially important.

What Are the Warning Signs?

Early cervical cancer may not cause noticeable symptoms. Possible symptoms at later stages include:

– Bleeding after sexual intercourse
– Bleeding between periods or after menopause
– Unusual vaginal discharge
– Persistent pelvic pain

These symptoms can have other causes, but they should be assessed by a gynecologist.
